When we think of a green home we often think of a rustic, isolated dwelling in the middle of a beautiful wilderness where people live off solar power and grow all their own foods.

While this is ideal for some, it's not realistic for many of use who live and work in large towns and cities. That doesn't mean you can't do a large variety of simple things to make your home more green and environmentally friendly and the same is certainly true for a business of any size.

It will also save you a good deal of money over time, too, for that reason alone it pays to switch to more eco friendly habits.

Turn the thermostat down a few degrees in the winter and wear a sweater indoors instead of cranking the heat up.

In the summer, try to avoid using air conditioning units whenever possible; they emit harmful emissions from potentially dangerous chemicals.

Fans are a more green friendly option when the temperature rises. Make sure your home or office has new quality windows and is well insinuated to help with heating and cooling so you use less energy on both.

Being Eco Friendly Is Easy

Changing your traditional bulbs to compact fluorescent lights (CFL) will not only save you money over the years, but the CFL light bulb will last longer and doesn't use as much energy, meaning less waste all around. Take shorter showers to reduce your water usage, and consider installing a low pressure shower head. Of course, recycling paper, plastics, glass and electronics is also very important, and now considerably easier than it was in years past thanks to a high increase in the amount of recycling centers across the country.

There was a time not so long ago that it seemed we would never run out of natural resources; those days are long over, and with their passing comes the knowledge that we all must be far more responsible in how we use those precious resources as well as ensuring that they are maintained and sustained for the long term.

Being eco friendly doesn't have to mean high tech and costly; there are simple things everyone can do around the home or business that will make a big impact in the long term.
